Cabinet Mintoff III
The Maltese Cabinet Mintoff III was formed on September 25, 1976 by Prime Minister Dom Mintoff of the Partit Laburista (PL). It replaced Mintoff's second cabinet and was in office until December 20, 1981.
history
In the elections to the House of Representatives on September 17 and 18, 1976, the mandates were again expanded from 55 to 65 seats, with the Partit Laburista Mintoffs having 34 seats and the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) of the former Prime Minister minorġ Borg Olivier 31 Got mandates. The PL thus continued to have an absolute majority.
As agreed in the troop station, the last British military units withdrew from Malta on March 31, 1979 ( Freedom Day ). Mintoff was reprimanded especially in Western Europe for his pro-Soviet policies. During his tenure, Malta maintained close foreign policy relations with the then Soviet Union and other members of the Warsaw Pact , the People's Republic of China , North Korea and, within the framework of the “common Mediterranean identity” propagated by it, also with Libya . On March 11, 1980, he signed a defense agreement with the North African state and less than a year later, on January 26, 1981, Malta authorized the Soviet Union to use its ports. In the same year, the country's first seawater desalination plant was put into operation at Ghar Lapsi on the southwest coast near the temple complexes of Mnajdra , thus reducing the chronic water shortage.
In the elections of December 12, 1981, the PN was under its new chairman Eddie Fenech Adami with 114,132 votes in front of the PL Mintoffs, which had 109,990 votes. Due to the right to vote, the Partit Laburista still had 34 seats, while the Partit Nazzjonalista received 31 seats. Mintoff then formed his fourth cabinet .
