Cabinet Fenech Adami IV
The Maltese Fenech Adami IV Cabinet was formed on September 6, 1998 by Prime Minister Edward "Eddie" Fenech Adami of the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN). It replaced Sant's cabinet and was in office until April 15, 2003.
history
In the early elections to the House of Representatives on September 5, 1998, the up to then opposition Partit Nazzjonalista of Fenech Adami was able to achieve an election victory over the previously ruling Partit Laburista (PL) of Prime Minister Alfred Sant . The PN won 137,037 votes (51.8 percent) and had a clear absolute majority with 35 of the 65 seats in parliament. The PL got 124,220 votes (47.0 percent) and lost five seats and only had 30 MPs because the House of Representatives was reduced to 65 seats again.
On September 14, 1998, the government of Fenech Adamis, who continued the pro-European course of his first term in office from 1987 to 1996, renewed the application for membership of the European Union (EU). On February 15, 2000, official accession negotiations began between the state organization and the Mediterranean island - at the same time as those of Bulgaria , Latvia , Lithuania , Romania and Slovakia . In a referendum on March 8, 2003, 53.6 percent of voters were in favor of joining the EU.
The elections to the House of Representatives on April 12, 2003 confirmed the PN, which again won 35 of the 65 seats in parliament with 146,172 votes (51.8 percent), while the PL achieved 134,092 votes (47.5 percent) and again had 30 MPs. As a result, Prime Minister Fenech Adami formed his fifth cabinet on April 15, 2003 .
