Giovanna Debono

Giovanna Debono (born November 25, 1956 in Victoria , Gozo ) is a Maltese politician for the Nationalist Party (until 2015) and Minister for Gozo from 1998 to 2013.

Giovanna Debono is the daughter of Coronato Attard , who was a member of the PN in the House of Representatives from 1962 to 1987 . After attending school, she herself completed a teaching degree at the University of Malta , which she completed in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Education). She then worked as a teacher until 1987.

Ms. Debono began her political career in 1987 when she was first elected member of the House of Representatives as a candidate for the Partit Nazzjonalista . In the elections in 1992 , 1996 , 1998 , 2003 and 2008 she was re-elected as a member of parliament. Since 1987 she has represented constituency 13 , which includes Gozo and Comino , in parliament .

On April 17, 1995, she was appointed Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development by Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami and held this position until the Partit Nazzjonalista was defeated in October 1996. In this capacity, she attended the 4th UN World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995 part.

After the PN electoral victory again, she appointed Prime Minister Fenech Adami to his cabinet as Minister for Gozo on September 8, 1998 . She then took over this office under his successor Lawrence Gonzi , who has been Prime Minister since March 23, 2004. This makes her the second female minister in Gonzi's government, alongside the Minister for Education and Culture, Dolores Cristina .

As Minister for Gozo, especially after Malta's accession to the European Union , she is committed to solving the island's particular problems, for example by promoting traditional wind-powered water pumps, but also for treating biodegradable waste. Among other things, it also supports projects in tourism, such as for divers .

In the parliamentary election on March 8, 2008 , she achieved more votes than Prime Minister Gonzi, Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg or Finance and Economics Minister Tonio Fenech with 5,633 votes in her constituency .
