Michael Refalo

Michael Refalo (born February 25, 1936 in Sliema ; † February 3, 2015 ibid) was a Maltese politician of the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN), who was a member of the House of Representatives between 1971 and 2003 and Minister of Justice between 1995 and 1996. He later served as Minister of Tourism from 1998 to 2003 and as High Commissioner in the United Kingdom between 2005 and 2008 .

Life

After attending St Aloysius College in Birkirkara, Refalo completed a law degree at the Royal University of Malta and subsequently took up a position as a lawyer in 1961. During his studies he was temporarily chairman of the university's student council. He ran in the elections on February 17 and 19, 1962 for the first time for the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) without success for a seat in the House of Representatives and was involved in the referendum for an independent constitution from May 2 to 4, 1964. After he again unsuccessfully applied for a mandate in the elections on March 26 and 28, 1966, he was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives in the elections on June 12 and 14, 1971 and belonged to it until the elections on June 12, 1971. April 2003. In addition to his political activities, he was editor-in-chief of the newspaper Il-Mument from 1972 to 1980 .

Refalo took over his first government office when Prime Minister Edward "Eddie" Fenech Adami appointed him to Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism ( Segretarju Parlamentari għat-Turiżmu ) in his first cabinet on May 12, 1987 . He also held this office in the second and third cabinet of Fenech Adami until April 1, 1995. As part of a government reshuffle , he replaced Joe Fenech as Minister of Justice ( Ministru tal-Gustizzja ) on April 1, 1995 and held this office until the end of Fenech Adami's tenure ended on October 28, 1996.

After the PN's victory in the elections on September 5, 1998, Refalo was appointed Minister of Tourism ( Ministru għat-Turiżmu ) in his fourth cabinet on September 6, 1998 by Prime Minister Fenech Adami . He held this ministerial office until April 15, 2003.

In 2005 Refalo became High Commissioner for Malta in the United Kingdom and remained in this position until October 2008. In this capacity, too, he campaigned for tourism by inviting other ambassadors and high commissioners to take short breaks in Malta, around the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino get to know. For his many years of service, he was appointed Companion of the National Order of Merit (KOM) on December 13, 2007 . He then became chairman of the Executive Committee of the Secretariat of the Commonwealth of Nations .

From his 1963 marriage to Blanche Smith, the son Edward and three daughters Angela, Tin and Nichola were born. Refalo died in the Prince of Wales Home for the Elderly in his native Sliema.
