Josef Bonnici

Josef Bonnici (born April 15, 1953 in Birżebbuġa ) is a Maltese politician of the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN), who was among other things a member of the House of Representatives , Minister of Economics and a member of the European Parliament .

Life

Josef Bonnici studied economics and became a lecturer at Deakin University in Melbourne in 1980 . After his return in 1986 he took over a professorship in economics at the University of Malta . He was elected as a candidate for the Nationalist Party PN ( Partit Nazzjonalista ) in the election on March 16, 1992 in constituency 11 for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives (Kamra Tad-Deputati) . He was also a deputy member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe between May 4, 1992 and June 26, 1995 . On April 17, 1995, he succeeded George Bonello Dupuis in the cabinet of Fenech Adami III as Minister for Economic Services and held this office until October 28, 1996. In the election on October 26, 1996 he was re-elected as a member of the House of Representatives for the PN in constituency 8.

In the election that followed on September 5, 1998 , Bonnici was re-elected as a member of the House of Representatives in constituency 8. On September 8, 1998, he was reappointed Minister of Economic Services in the Fenech Adami IV cabinet and held this post until April 15, 2003. In the election on May 8, 2003 , he was re-elected as a member of the House of Representatives. On May 9, 2003 he also became an observer to the EU Parliament and joined the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats . Between May 15, 2003 and April 30, 2004 he was also an observer in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Committee on Women's Rights and Equal Opportunities. After Malta joined the EU on May 1, 2004, he became a member of the European Parliament and was a member of it from May 1 to 6, 2004. He was then a member of the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats and now a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Committee on Women's Rights and Equal Opportunities. He was then a member of the European Court of Auditors from 2004 until his replacement by Louis Galea in January 2010 .

On July 1, 2011, he dissolved Michael C. Bonello as Governor of the Central Bank ( Bank Ċentrali ta 'Malta ) and held this position until June 30, 2016, when Mario Vella was his successor.
