Mario Vella

Mario Vella (* 1953 in Tripoli ) is a Maltese philosopher , economist and politician . He has been Governor of the Central Bank of Malta since June 2016 .

Life

Vella was born in Tripoli and grew up there in the Italian community. He attended the Roman Catholic school in Tripoli . After his family returned to Malta, he went to the De La Salle College in Cottonera . He then studied philosophy at the University of Malta , sociology at the University of London and international political economy at the Humboldt University in Berlin . After graduating, he began teaching Italian and sociology in public schools . He then taught Political Economy and Social Change at the University of Malta. He was visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh , Urbino and the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan .

This was followed by years of activity as CEO of the Maltese investment and marketing company "Malta Development Corporation", the state-run "Malta Enterprise" and activities for the auditor Grant Thornton International . In 2016 he was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Malta.
