The Austrian Bhutan Society (until 2010 Austrian-Bhutanese cooperation, friendship and cultural society ) is a bilateral and intercultural friendship society that aims to maintain and supplement the diplomatic-state relations between the two countries on the level of civil society.

history

The Kingdom of Bhutan in the Eastern Himalayas and the Republic of Austria have had diplomatic relations since April 26, 1989. Bhutan is the only priority country for Austrian state development cooperation in Asia. The Embassy of Bhutan to the United Nations in Geneva is responsible for Austria . The state-recognized Austrian Bhutan Society was founded on March 13, 1998 by Ulli Walter and Claus Walter. Royal Honorary Consul General has been Gunther Hölbl since November 21, 2018.

The Austrian Bhutan Society is an organization registered both in the Central Register of Associations of the Ministry of the Interior and the Bhutanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The President has been Ministerialrat Claus Walter since it was founded in 1998, head of the Support International department in the Ministry of Education until his retirement and, for 15 years, President of the umbrella association of all Austrian-foreign companies - PaN . The general secretary is Jacqueline Strobl, Erwin Kubesch acts as the spokesperson, Christian Prosl is the honorary president . The sister company in the capital Thimphu is the Bhutan Austria Society with its President Langa Dorji . The Austrian Bhutan Society has been included in the United Nations database as a recognized NGO . Since then it has acted as a liaison office to the OSCE , the Office of the United Nations and all other international organizations with official headquarters in Vienna.

According to its own information, one of the central tasks of the bilateral association is to network people in Austria who are interested in Bhutan and want to be provided with information about the land of the thunder kite . The company develops and oversees humanitarian development aid projects in the partner country Bhutan, such as a primary school in Pangtokha in the eastern Trashiyangtse district since 2005 . Another focus concerns the raising of scholarships to enable Bhutanese students to study places in Austria.

In 2007, the company initiated and named the Druk-Yul-Park in Vienna. Bhutan is called Druk Yul in the local language .
