George Hyzler

George J. Hyzler (born May 26, 1926 in Żejtun ; † January 20, 2011 in Qormi ) was a Maltese politician of the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN), who was a member of the House of Representatives between 1962 and 1995 and Minister for Social Security from 1992 to 1995 .

Life

After attending school, Hyzler graduated from the Royal University of Malta with a degree in medicine , from which he obtained a doctorate in medicine (MD). In 1954 he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and subsequently served in the Aldershot garrison . After his return to Malta he was a doctor at St Luke's Hospital in Pietà between 1954 and 1956 and then at St Vincent de Paule Hospital .

In the elections on February 17 and 19, 1962, Hyzler was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives for the Partit Nazzjonalista and was a member of this until his resignation on April 17, 1995. In 1965 he became the representative of Malta in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . During this time he served as the opposition spokesman for health from 1974 to 1987 . After the PN victory in the elections on May 9, 1987, he was appointed by Prime Minister Edward "Eddie" Fenech Adami on May 12, 1987 as Parliamentary Secretary for Health ( Segretarju Parlamentari ghas-Sahha ) in the latter's first cabinet and also held this office in his second cabinet until February 27, 1992.

After Fenech Adami formed his third cabinet on February 27, 1992 after the PN victory in the elections on February 22, 1992 , Hyzler became Minister of Social Security ( Ministru ghas-Sigurta Socjali ). As such, was particularly responsible for families and housing construction. During his tenure as minister, he was heavily involved in founding the Maltese Red Cross Society and the UNICEF National Committee . On April 17, 1995, he resigned as minister and at the same time resigned from the House of Representatives.

In June 1995, Hyzler was appointed by UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali as director of the International Institute on Aging operated by the United Nations and the government of Malta and held this office until 1998. From November 1, 1995 to 1999, he was also ambassador to Poland , the Czech Republic and Slovakia . For his many years of service, he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the National Order of Merit (UOM) on December 13, 1998 . He also acted as provisional head of state ( Agent President tar-Repubblika ) between 1999 and 2009 when the respective president was absent or prevented from doing so .

His marriage to Elvira Bonnici in 1954 gave birth to three sons, George Mario , Karl and Mario. After his father's departure from parliament in 1995, George Mario Hyzler succeeded him as a member of the House of Representatives.
