Lawrence Gatt

Lawrence Gatt (born May 12, 1941 in Rabat , Malta ) is a Maltese writer and former politician of the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN), who was a member of the House of Representatives between 1971 and 1996 and Minister for Production Development in the first cabinet, Fenech Adami and between 1987 and 1990 In 1990 and 1992 he was Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries in the second cabinet of Fenech Adami . In the third Fenech Adami cabinet , he was then Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries between 1992 and 1996.

Life

After attending school, Gatt, son of Joseph Gatt and Rożina Sammut, began studying architecture at the Faculty of Architecture & Civil Engineering at the University of Malta , graduating in 1967 with a Bachelor of Architecture & Civil Engineering . Then he began his professional activity as an architect . In 1968 he was one of the founders of the San Pawl il-Baħar- based football club Sirens FC and was its chairman until 1996.

He was elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in the elections on June 12 and 14, 1971, and was a member of the House of Representatives as a representative of the 9th electoral district from the fourth to the end of the seventh electoral term on September 23, 1996. In 1971 he also became a member of the General Council of the PN. In 1976 he was appointed by then PN chairman Ġorġ Borg Olivier as shadow minister for agriculture and fisheries in his shadow cabinet and held this function from 1977 to 1987 in the shadow cabinet of the new PN chairman Edward Fenech Adami .

After the victory of the Partit Nazzjonalista in the House of Representatives elections on May 9, 1987, Bonnici was appointed Minister for Production Development in his first cabinet by Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami on May 12, 1987 . He then took over from May 3, 1990 to February 27, 1992 in the second Fenech Adami cabinet, the post of Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. In the third cabinet of Fenech Adami , he finally served from February 27, 1992 to October 28, 1996 as Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. He was a member of the House of Representatives' Economic Committee between 1994 and 1996. As Minister of Agriculture, he participated in several regional meetings of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and served as Vice-Chair at each of these meetings. He was also instrumental in founding the Agricultural Institute at the University of Malta and in promoting aquaculture .

In 1997 the Mosta City Council awarded him the Ġieħ il-Mosta award . His daughter Louiselle Gatt and sons Etienne Gatt and Joseph Gatt emerged from his marriage to Agnes Sciberras in 1967.

Gatt, who is also a member of the Maltese Poets Association (Għaqda Poeti Maltin) , has also been active as a writer since retiring from political life and wrote not only short stories and poems, but also novels. His most famous publications include:
