Adriano José Alves Moreira (born September 6, 1922 in Grijó do Vale Benfeito , Macedo de Cavaleiros , Portugal ) is a Portuguese politician and lawyer.

Career

In 1944, Moreira graduated from the Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon in history and law and became a lawyer. In the same year he was given a position as head of department of the General Archives of the Criminal and Police Archives, which he held until 1947. He then moved to the private sector as General Secretary and Member of the Board of Directors of Standard Eléctrica . In 1950 Moreira was accepted as an assistant professor at the Instituto Superior de Estudos Ultramarinos. Here he was first full professor and finally director of the institute until 1959. He also founded the Centro de Estudos Políticos e Sociais and became its director. He had another director post at the Junta de Investigações do Ultramar (Investigation Council for the Overseas Territories).

Moreira began his political career while still in the Portuguese dictatorship as a member of the advisory bodies of the Overseas Council (Conselho Ultramarino) and Portugal's delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations . Moreira was from 1960 to 1961 Undersecretary for the Overseas Administration and from 1961 to 1962 Minister for the Overseas Territories (Ministro do Ultramar) , the colonies of Portugal.

In 1964 Moreira became president of the Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa , but in 1974, when the dictatorship ended with the Carnation Revolution, he went into exile in Brazil , where he lectured at various universities. In 1978 he returned to Portugal and was re-admitted to the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas , where he took over the functions of President of the Scientific Council. Eventually Moreira became rector of the Universidade Internacional .

From 1980 to 1995 Moreira was a member of the Portuguese Parliament, the Assembleia da República , for five legislatures , and from 1991 to 1995 Vice-President of Parliament. As a member of the Centro Democrático e Social (CDS, part of the Aliança Democrática AD in Moreira's first legislature ), he represented the constituencies of Bragança , Porto twice and Lisbon twice . From 1985 to 1986 Moreira was chairman of the CDS, which in 1991 was renamed Centro Democrático e Social - Partido Popular (CDS-PP). He was also an attorney for the Chamber of Commerce by appointment of the Conselho Corporativo .

Awards

Moreira has been a corresponding member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras since 1975 . He is also a member of the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa .

On May 6, 2015, Moreira was awarded the Medal des Ordem de Timor-Leste by President Taur Matan Ruak . Moreira was the chairman of the Timor Commission of the Portuguese Parliament and strongly advocated the East Timorese right to self-determination .

Moreira is also the holder of several Portuguese orders. On September 5, 1957 he received the Order of Christ (Commander), on January 3, 1961 the Order of the Infante Dom Henrique (Grand Officer), on December 19, 1962 the Grand Cross of the Order of Christ, on June 10, 1992 the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Jacob by the sword and finally on October 9, 2017 the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique.
