The district of San Antonio is located in the province of Puno in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was established on January 30, 1953. It has an area of ​​337 km². The 2017 census counted 2649 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1237, in 2007 it was 2570. The seat of the district administration is the 4330  m high village Juncal with 307 inhabitants (as of 2017). Juncal is located 47 km southwest of the regional and provincial capital Puno .

Geographical location

The district of San Antonio is located in the southwest of the province of Puno. It is about halfway between the Cordillera Volcánica in the southwest and Lake Titicaca in the northeast. The longitudinal extent in SW-NE direction is 33 km, the maximum width is 15 km. The watershed between the Pacific Ocean and the Altiplano runs through the south of the district . The extreme northeast is in the catchment area of the Río Ilave , the rest of the area in the catchment area of ​​the Río Tambo .

The district of San Antonio borders in the southwest on the district Ichuña ( province General Sánchez Cerro ), in the northwest and in the north on the district Tiquillaca , in the extreme northeast on the district Puno and in the southeast on the district Pichacani .
