The Coata district is located in the Puno Province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district has an area of ​​101 km². The 2017 census counted 6941 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 6301, in 2007 it was 7387. The seat of the district administration is the 3814  m high village of Coata with 413 inhabitants (as of 2017). Coata is located 31 km northeast of the regional and provincial capital Puno .

Geographical location

The district of Coata is located on the west bank of Lake Titicaca in the north of the province of Puno. The district is located at the mouth of the Río Coata . The eastern part of the district is on the Capachica peninsula .

The district of Coata borders in the southwest on the district Huata , in the northwest on the district Caracoto ( province San Román ), in the north on the district Pusi ( province Huancané ) and in the east on the district Capachica .
