The Caracoto district is located in the San Román province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district emerged in the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of ​​277 km². The 2017 census counted 7119 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 6926, in 2007 6058. The seat of the district administration is the 3825  m high village of Caracoto with 1197 inhabitants (as of 2017). Caracoto is located 9 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Juliaca .

Geographical location

The Caracoto district is located in the extreme south-east of the San Román province, just under 6 km from the north-western shore of Lake Titicaca .

The Caracoto district is bordered to the west by the Cabana district , to the northwest by the Juliaca and San Miguel districts , to the northeast by the Pusi district ( Huancané province ), to the southeast by the Coata and Huata districts and to the southwest by the Atuncolla district (the three the latter districts belong to the province of Puno ).
