The lake is approx. 2 km long and approx. 1 km wide and is located in the Lucre district , Quispicanchi province , in the Cusco region . On September 23, 2006, the Lucre - Huacarpay wetland was declared a Ramsar area . It is characterized by its abundance of water birds . Some endemic species such as white-necked sylphe (Oreonympha nobilis) , garleppy (Asthenes ottonis) , emperor's amber finch (Poospiza caesar) and numerous other species such as aplomado falcon (Falco femoralis) , peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) find a refuge here.

However, biodiversity and the landscape are endangered due to human interference such as deforestation , water pollution, overexploitation and overhunting.
The lake is located about 25 km from the historical city of Cusco in the archaeological park of Pikillaqta . There is great ecotouristic potential for the zone . The project for the conservation and sustainable development of the Laguna Wacarpay ( Proyecto de Conservación y Desarrollo Sostenible de la Laguna de Wacarpay ) aims to protect nature in close cooperation with the local population .
