Livonian rhyming chronicle

The Livonian Rhyming Chronicle is a traditional account of the events in Livonia in the 12th and 13th centuries . For this chronicle, the reporter used the form of the rhyming chronicle that was widespread in Western Europe in the Middle Ages .

The Livonian Rhyming Chronicle describes the deeds of the Teutonic Order beginning from 1143 to around 1290 .

The later deeds of the Teutonic Order in Livonia are described by "The Younger Livonian Rhyming Chronicle". This is dedicated to the years 1315 to 1348.

The Livonian Rhyming Chronicle consists of 12017 verses, of which there are two handwritten traditions:

Verses 2561 to 3840 have been torn from the Riga edition. In the remaining verses, both editions are the same.

author

The author of the Livonian Rhyming Chronicle is unknown. Based on notes in the Riga tradition, Ditleb von Alnpeke was originally assumed to be the author. However, the comments turned out to be added at a later date. It is therefore only certain that the unknown author must have been in Livonia between 1278 and 1279, presumably in the service of the Teutonic Order , probably as a herald . This enabled him to travel across the country and witness various events.

Events from 1143 to 1291 are described. Verses 2065 to 2294 contain descriptions of the battle on Lake Peipus . The verses 9225 to 9233 inform about the flag of the Latvians at that time .
