from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bartholomäus Hoeneke was a clergyman of the Livonian Order in the 14th century and author of the Younger Livonian Rhyming Chronicle .

life and work

Bartholomäus Hoeneke lived around the middle of the 14th century, probably at the court of the Vogts von Järva (German Jerwen ) near Paide ( Weißenstein ). He was chaplain of three land masters of the Livonian Order ( Fratres miliciae Christi de Livonia ).

Around 1346/1348 Hoeneke wrote the so-called Younger Livonian Rhyming Chronicle , which deals with the events in Estonia and Livonia between 1315 and 1384. It was written in verse in Middle Low German and conceived as a continuation of the older Livonian rhyming chronicle, which describes the deeds of the Teutonic Order from 1190 to around 1290.

The original version of Hoeneke's work has been lost. Its content is retold in the chronicle of the Bremen chronicler Johann Renner from the 16th century. In the chronicle, among other things, the Estonian uprising on St. George's Night is described.
