Leo Karl Heinrich Meyer (born July 3, 1830 in Bledeln , † June 6, 1910 in Göttingen ) was a German linguist and Russian State Councilor.

Life

Leo Meyer attended the lyceum in Hanover from 1844 to 1848 and the grammar school in Holzminden from 1848 to 1849 . From 1849 to 1852 he studied philology with Theodor Benfey in Göttingen , where he also became a member of the Corps Brunsviga . In 1856 he completed his habilitation, in 1862 he became associate professor . In 1865 he followed the call to the Imperial University of Dorpat and took over the chair for German and comparative linguistics. Nikolai Anderson , Leopold von Schroeder and Peter von Bradke were among his students in Dorpat . Meyer was an assessor since 1861 and a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences since 1865 . In 1877 he was appointed Imperial Russian Real State Councilor. From 1869 to 1899 Meyer was president of the Estonian learned society , from which he received honorary membership in 1894. In 1896 Meyer and his cousin Wolfgang Schlueter became an honorary philistine of Estonia . Released from his office in Dorpat in January 1899, he later went to ord. Honorary professor back to Göttingen.
