Leopold von Schroeder
Leopold Alexander von Schroeder (* December 12th July / December 24th 1851 greg. In Dorpat ; † February 8th 1920 in Vienna ) was a German-Baltic Indologist .
origin
His parents were the educator Julius von Schroeder (1808–1888) and his wife Marie von Schrenck (1817–1895). His uncle Dr. phil. Alexander von Schrenk (1816–1876) was a mineralogist and co-founder of the Dorpater Naturforscher Society. His brothers were also very successful:
- Julius (1843–1895), Dr. phil. and Professor of Chemistry at the Tharandt Forest Academy.
- Woldemar (1850–1898) photographer in Dorpat and Riga and from 1890 professor of pharmacology in Heidelberg
- Theodor (1853–1903), Dr. med., ophthalmologist
Life
Since 1882 lecturer in Indology at the University of Dorpat , where he had previously been a student of Leo Meyer , he became a state councilor in 1890, a full professor in Innsbruck in 1896 and worked in Vienna from 1899 . In 1894 he was elected an honorary member of the Estonian Scholarly Society . One of his special achievements is the translation of the Bhagavadgita from Sanskrit . This translation is still important today in German-speaking countries. He also dealt scientifically with legends and myths . He was one of the few who scientifically dealt with the subject of the Grail saga and researched its roots. His mythological school in Vienna tried to prove the continuity of German culture from the Indo-European period to modern times.
family
He married Lilly von Foelkersahm (1844–1901), a well-known poet and widow of the landowner Karl von Vietinghoff († 1880/81), in Riga in 1891 . His wife brought 2 step-sons and 3 step-daughters into the marriage.
