Ikšķile ( German : Uexküll ) is a Latvian city on the Daugava (Düna) , about 30 km upstream from Riga . In 2018 Ikšķile had 7,400 inhabitants.
history
The history of the place and the entire surrounding area is linked to the Christianization that began at the end of the 12th century by the bishops of Uexküll and Riga . The place was one of the first bases of the Knights of the Brothers of the Sword in the Baltic States. The first stone building in the Baltic States was erected here in 1185. An episcopal church and a castle followed. The Augustinian canon Meinhard von Segeberg became the first bishop of Livonia, and from here he promoted the Christianization of what is now Latvia. After the death of his successor Berthold in 1198, the bishopric was moved from Uexküll / Ikšķile to Riga in 1201 .
The present place was formed around an estate. After the construction of the Riga - Dünaburg railway line in 1861, Ikšķile was overtaken by the neighboring Ogre .
During the First World War , heavy fighting took place on the so-called Death Island (Lat: Nāves sala ), which lies opposite the city. A memorial was later dedicated to the Latvian rifle regiments involved .
When the Riga hydropower plant was built in the 1970s, the water level of the Daugava rose. The island on which the historic castle and church stand was artificially raised and fortified.
Place name
- The name Uexküll means "Eindorf" in the Livonian language (üks: a, küla: village).
- The place is named after the German-Baltic noble family of Uexküll . In 1257 a native of Bremish-Oldenburg landing Ritter Johann was of Bardewis with the castle Uexkuell invested , which led the archbishop of Riga to change the name.
Ikšķiles novads
In 2004 the city merged with the rural community of Tīnūži, 5 kilometers northeast of Ikšķile, to form an administrative district (Latvian: novads) with 10,031 inhabitants (2018). (see also: Administrative division of Latvia )

The internationally best known Latvian writer Nora Ikstena has her private residence in Ikšķile.
