The Augustinian Canons (also Augustinian Canons ; abbreviation : CRSA from Latin Canonici regulares Sancti Augustini or CanReg from Latin Canonici Regulares ) are an amalgamation of several Catholic orders of canons who live according to the rule of St. Augustine . They are in the majority priests , the solemn liturgy of the hours care and at the same time in the pastoral work. The Augustinian Canons are regular canons .
history
In the 11th century reforms were among the canons performed, at regulated canon pins led. At synods held in Rome in 1059 and 1063, the various spiritual communities of the clergy were exhorted to introduce a uniform rule . By the middle of the 12th century, the rule of St. Augustine of Hippo was introduced in almost all of these communities , which was officially confirmed by the Lateran Council in 1215. Augustinian canons then take a vow on their pen and choose either the Praeceptum / ordo antiquus or the stricter version Ordo monasterii / ordo novus from the two traditional Augustine rules . From the 13th century on there was a monastery of canons in Naumburg am Bober (today Nowogrod Bobrzanski). These put u. a. in the Mark Brandenburg the village of Gerlachsdorf (today Görlsdorf) . During the Reformation in the 16th century and the secularization at the beginning of the 19th century, the Augustinian canons were largely dissolved in German-speaking countries. While there have only been canons in various new branches in Germany since 1973, some pens existed continuously in Austria and Switzerland. For example, the large Klosterneuburg Abbey at the gates of Vienna has remained a cultural and religious factor over the centuries. In Switzerland, however, the Saint-Maurice Abbey deserves special mention, the oldest still existing monastery in the West.
confederacy
On May 4, 1959, Pope John XXIII founded with the Apostolic Letter "Caritas Unitas" in memory of the 900th anniversary of the Easter Synod of April 13, 1059 the "Confederation of Augustinian Canons".
He summarized the covenant of canons - according to his words - so that they can support each other and be charitable together. The Abbot Primate of the Confederation is elected for a period of six years on the proposal of the Confederation members. He coordinates the relationships between the individual congregations and regulates the liturgical celebrations . He makes proposals for scholarships and can appoint new choir members. From October 19, 2010 to October 11, 2016, the Abbot Primate was Bernhard Backovsky , Provost of Klosterneuburg Monastery and Abbot General of the Congregation of the Austrian Augustinian Canons . He was succeeded in October 2016 by the provost of the monastery of the Great Saint Bernard Jean-Michel Girard . The confederation has its headquarters in Rome and the following congregations belong to it:
