Nora Ikstena (born October 15, 1969 in Riga ) is a Latvian writer (novel, essay, short story, biography) and Chairwoman of the Latvian National Culture Council.

Life

Ikstena studied literature and English at the University of Latvia in Riga from 1987 to 1992 . After a long stay abroad in New York City for further studies, she returned to her home country and co-founded the Latvian National Cultural Center in Riga.

Her debut novel Dzīves svinēšana (~ Celebration of Life ) was published in Latvia in 1998 and was later translated into three Scandinavian languages ​​(Norwegian, Danish and Swedish) and published. Since then she has published more than twenty other books in Latvia.

As a writer and cultural manager , she was awarded the Latvian National Three Star Order for Service to Literature (similar to the Order of the British Empire) in Latvia in 2008 and the Baltic Assembly Prize for Literature, the Arts and Sciences in 2006 . Her novel Mātes piens received the Laligaba Latvian Literature Prize in 2015. He was licensed for translation in fifteen languages ​​and was nominated for the EBRD Literature Prize in London in 2019 .

The novel Muttermilch (originally Latvian: Mātes piens , Dienas grāmata 2015) was the only one of her books to be translated into German and published there in 2019 by the small Kreuzberg publishing house Klak. It was published in English by Peirene Press in London in 2018 under the name Soviet Milk .

Nora Ikstena lives in Ikšķile , around 30 km upstream from Riga.
