Life

His parents were Count Gunzelin III. von Schwerin († 1274) and Margarete von Rostock. His brother Gunzelin IV was canon of Schwerin from 1273 to 1279 .

Johannes is first documented on December 6, 1267 as Canon of Cammin or Magdeburg . On March 6, 1267, Pope Clement IV reserved the next vacant prebend for him at the Schwerin cathedral chapter. He has been documented as Canon of Schwerin since June 9, 1279. From 1295 he must also have held the thesaurariat , as he was named as such when he was confirmed as Archbishop of Riga.

After the death of Riga's Archbishop Johannes von Vechta in 1294, the cathedral chapter chose Johannes von Schwerin as his successor. Therefore he traveled to Rome, where he was appointed and consecrated Archbishop of Riga on April 18, 1295 after the renunciation of the right from the Riga election by Pope Boniface VIII .

In 1296/97 the long-standing disputes between the city of Riga and the Teutonic Order broke out again. a. was about building a bridge. Although the archbishop , who had returned from Flanders , tried to mediate, he could not prevent Riga citizens from storming the Jürgenshof on September 30, 1297 and killing 60 knights and the commander . After the order managed to defeat its opponents under the leadership of the landmaster , Archbishop Johannes was imprisoned at the Fellin order castle . There he was forced to sign a contract that entrusted the Order with the administration of the monastery property. Archbishop Johannes was released through an initiative of the Pope. He left Riga and went to the Curia . Before December 19, 1300 he died in Anagni. His burial place is unknown.
