Edward A. Allworth

Edward Alfred Allworth (born December 1, 1920 - October 20, 2016 in New York City ) was an American historian . He was professor emeritus of Turco -sowjetische studies, director of the Center for the Study of Central Asia and member of the Harriman Institute at Columbia University .

During the Second World War Allworth was active for the US Army in Normandy. His scientific career led him from Oregon State University , where he received his bachelor's degree, via a master’s degree from the University of Chicago to Columbia University , where he completed his studies in 1959 with a Ph.D. graduated after being one of the first American visitors to visit Soviet Central Asia in 1957. After serving at Reed College and the Ford Foundation , he returned to Columbia University. Here he became the founding director of both the program for Soviet nationality problems, which began in 1970, and the Center for the Study of Central Asia, which was established in 1984 . In the 1980s Allworth was a number of official exchange programs between American and Soviet students; later he was invited by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, as well as the Uzbek and Kazakh academies, to conduct research on various topics on site. His numerous scientific publications include writings on Soviet Afghanistan, the Crimean Tatars, Tajikistan and studies on the Uzbek intelligentsia.
