from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gunzelin III. von Schwerin , also Günzel III. von Schwerin , († after October 23, 1274 ) was a count of Schwerin .

Life

Gunzelin III. was the son of Count Heinrich von Schwerin and the Audacia. After his father's death in 1228, Gunzelin, who was still a minor, was under the tutelage of his mother. This secured the fiefdom of the Schwerin county. For example, when he was released, Duke Otto von Braunschweig , who was held prisoner in Schwerin after the Battle of Bornhöved, had to confirm to Count Gunzelin the property given as a fief by the Duke of Brunswick . All fiefdoms of this time were notarized jointly by mother and son. On November 1, 1246, both of them certify the Zarrentin monastery the first land ownership and the foundation of the monastery. When he was engaged on October 30, 1230 to the Mecklenburg prince's daughter Margarethe, Prince Johann I of Mecklenburg , who had just come of age, was appointed his guardian.

On November 21, 1267 Gunzelin III. elected patron of the Archdiocese of Riga at the instigation of Archbishop Albert Suerbeer , which led to a deep conflict with the Livonian Order . While Gunzelin was recruiting troops in Germany, the Order held Albert prisoner. Albert Suerbeer was forced to recognize the authority of the order. During his visit to Riga Gunzelin probably also visited the Dünamünde monastery , to which he had given land in the village of Siggelkow in 1235 .

progeny

Gunzelin III. married in 1241 Margarethe von Mecklenburg († after August 18, 1267), the daughter of Heinrich Borwin II. There are six sons, among them the Riga bishop Johannes von Schwerin and two daughters known by name. After the death of Gunzelins III. In 1274 his sons Helmold and Nikolaus shared their inheritance in 1282. Helmold III. received Boizenburg, Wittenburg and Crivitz (line Wittenburg-Boizenburg) and Nikolaus I. Schwerin, Neustadt and Marnitz (line Schwerin).
