history
The square was one of the most important urban development measures in Nancy in the 18th century; The idea for this comes from Stanisław Leszczyński (in French: Stanislas ), the Duke of Lorraine and former King of Poland, to rebuild the medieval city (French: vieille ville , German: old city) from the 10th century with the new town (French. ville neuve ) from the 16th century. The square was named in honor of Stanislas' son-in-law Louis XV. to which he also owed the Duchy of Lorraine, named Place Royale .
Construction began in March 1752 and ended in November 1755. The square with the adjacent buildings is a design by the architect Emmanuel Héré . It is surrounded by the ornate ironwork that is the work of Jean Lamour .
In the middle of the square was a cast iron statue of Louis XV, but it was removed during the French Revolution . In 1831 a statue of Stanislas was erected instead; since then the square has been called "Place Stanislas" .
