The Place d'Alliance (dt. Alliance Square ) is a square in the city center of Nancy . In 1983 it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites together with Place Stanislas and Place de la Carrière and is under monument protection as Monument historique .
location
The square is located around 150 meters east of the central Place Stanislas in Nancy city center. The square is bordered by Rue Girardet, Rue Guibal and Rue Lyautey.
history
After the old fortifications had been razed, the Duke of Lorraine's vegetable garden was located at the place where it is today. At the request of the former Polish King and Duke of Lorraine Stanislaus I. Leszczyński , Emmanuel Héré built the new square between 1751 and 1753. Initially, the square was called Place Royale (English: Royal Square ), in 1756 it was given its current name, which is supposed to recall the alliance between France and Austria-Hungary , but also the merger of the duchies of Bar and Lorraine.
During the French Revolution the square became the Place de la Renommée, then in memory of Marie Joseph Chalier the Place Chalier.
architecture
The square is rectangular and covers an area of 80 by 60 meters. Since 1763 the square has been framed by two rows of linden trees, some of which are still preserved today.
Fountain
At the request of Duke Stanislas, the sculptor Paul-Louis Cyfflé built a fountain to commemorate the alliance between France and Austria-Hungary. The building originally stood on the Place de la Carrière but was soon moved to its current location.
The irregularly shaped basin is almost round. In the center is a massive rock mass. Three old men rest on it, symbolizing the three rivers Schelde , Maas and Rhine and whose water the basin takes up. The bearded men hold a huge plate on which three horns of abundance lie and in the center of which a stone obelisk with medallions rises up, which is crowned by an angel with a horn and a shield.
Several Latin inscriptions can be found on the fountain. The angel's shield reads : Perennæ Concordiæ Fœdus Anno 1756 (German: “Eternal Concordat Agreement of 1756”). On the edge of the plate you can find:
- Publicam spondent salutem ( Eng . "Public Safety Guaranteed"); above a medallion with two hands
- Optato vincta discordia nexu (“Longed for bound in harmony”); above it a medallion with two hands holding several arrows
- Prisca recensque fides votum conspirat in unum (“Old and new fidelity are a common wish”); above a medallion with the Lorraine cross and lilies
Development
The square is surrounded by several city palaces ( Hôtel particulier ) with uniform facades that give the impression of an architectural ensemble. Duke Stanislas himself ensured with financial support that the facades were designed uniformly. The architect Emmanuel Héré and Richard Mique were among the first owners of the houses .
The palace at Place d'Alliance No. 2 housed a branch of the Banque de France from 1853 until it moved to Rue Chanzy in 1880. Today the Honorary Consulate of Latvia resides in one of the houses.
Monument protection
The fountain has been classified as a monument historique since January 15, 1925, the rest of the square was placed under monument protection on February 25, 1950. In December 1983 the square was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites together with Place Stanislas and Place de la Carrière.
