The Place de la Carrière is a square in the center of Nancy . It is listed as a Monument Historique and, together with Place Stanislas and Place d'Alliance, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

location

The square is located northwest of the central Place Stanislas in the old town. The Place Stanislas and the Place de la Carrière are connected via the Rue Héré and separated by the Arc Héré . As an extension of the Rue Héré, the square forms a line of sight between the ducal palace and the Palais du Gouvernement.

architecture

The elongated square connects the old town with the new town of the 18th century, which was founded by Duke Stanislas . The west and east sides are bordered by two rows of plane trees. A low wall surrounds the square, the corners are formed by four fountains with children's figures. At the southern and northern ends a high wrought iron fence delimits the square.

history

The place before the renovation by Stanislas

The square was built in the 16th century when the medieval city's fortifications were moved. Noble families built representative city palaces around the square . The square itself was mainly used for tournaments and equestrian games. At the end of the 17th century, the French occupiers broke a gate in the ramparts of the city to create a connection between the old town and the emerging new town in the south outside the fortifications.

The Lorraine Duke Stanislas I. Leszczynski then decided in the middle of the 18th century to combine the old town and the new town and create a new center. Leopold von Lothringen had already started building a palace at the northern end of the square, which, however, remained unfinished. There Stanislas built the Palais de l'Intendance (today Palais du Gouvernement). This is followed by two large, semicircular colonnades with statues and busts of the gods of Olympus to the west and east . Two mansions in the style of the French Renaissance, the Hotel Héré and the Hôtel de Morvilliers , then follow the square and form the northern end of the flanking buildings.

On the long sides of the square, the city palaces were rebuilt in the Renaissance style by Emmanuel Héré in a classical style. The southern city gate was rebuilt in the style of a magnificent triumphal arch, and several classicist city villas were built in the southeast. A square was built in the center, framed by orange trees and adorned with stone vases created by the artists Mesny and Lépy. Wells were built in the corners.

Monument protection

The Arc Héré, the Palais du Gouvernement and the colonnades have been monuments historiques since 1923, large parts of the facades of the surrounding houses since 1925. In 2003 and 2005 the monument protection was extended. In December 1983, the Place de la Carrière was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites together with Place Stanislas and Place d'Alliance .
