Arc Héré in Nancy

The Arc Héré is a triumphal arch in Nancy in France .

1757 by Stanislaus I. Leszczyński in honor of Louis XV. erected, the monumental gate forms the northern end of the Place Stanislas to the Place de la Carrière. The gate was built by Emmanuel Héré in the middle of the city wall that separated the old and new towns. It is reminiscent of the triumphal arches that the Roman rulers had erected for their own glory, especially the Arch of Septimius Severus in Rome . The facade on Rue Héré is broken through by a central passage that forms a risalit . The attic is decorated with three large bas-reliefs, statues extend the vertical of the columns. This ornament is about war and peace (as a reminder of the victory of Moritz Graf von Sachsen in 1745 at Fontenoy and the peace of Aachen in 1748). A gilded medallion with Louis XV. as a profile closes the triumphal arch, below is the dedication in Latin (with translation):

HOSTIUM TERROR / The enemy's horror
FOEDERUM CULTOR / The alliance
maker GENTISQUE DECUS ET AMOR / The people's adornment and love
