At the same time he founds a concert and event agency. After completing his studies, he worked at radio ffn in Hanover from 2000 . Westphal was a news editor at first. Later he moderated changing programs in the daytime and evening programs, including the chart show " The Yellow from the Egg " in 2002 and the afternoon show for several months. In 2003 Westphal moved to NDR 2 in Hamburg . He initially moderated evening and weekend programs there. From 2005 he could be heard regularly in the special music programs "NDR 2 Soundcheck". Interactive narrative formats

Between 2012 and 2013 Westphal developed an interactive narrative format for his diploma thesis with Rainer Leschke , which converts the classic radio feature into a digital, media-convergent form. Essential features of this narrative form are the non-linearity, the individualization of the content in terms of content depth and narrative speed as well as the cross-media, multimodal presentation and production. Westphal considers the further development of narrative formats to be necessary in order to adapt to the reception expectations of users, which are shaped by smartphones. In 2014, his concept was published as a book entitled " How radio can survive on the Internet: Development of a new storytelling format based on the feature ".

Together with the Berlin media artist Florian Thalhofer and the filmmaker Felix Pauschinger, Westphal began work in 2018 on an interactive, non-linear and predominantly film-based form of representation on the subject of artificial intelligence under the project name " Codonaut ".
