The Dietacher Holz is a forest area near Steyr in Upper Austria .
Location and landscape
The Dietacher Holz is one of the larger remains of the forest in the extra-alpine Traunviertel . It is located on the northern outskirts of Steyr in the municipality of Dietach , at around 300 m above sea level. A. The forest extends over a good 2 kilometers on the river terrace of the Enns , east of Dietachdorf to the Enns opposite Hainbuch .
Nature and water management
In the area of Dietacher Holz, the gravel bodies of the Quaternary low terrace contain an important source of groundwater, which is used by several wells for the drinking water supply of Steyr and Dietach. The Dietacher wood is therefore also known locally as a water forest . Almost 14 hectares are designated as a water protection area, the associated water protection area extends over Dietachdorf, Dornach , Gleink to Stein and is currently being revised with regard to its area.
The forest is a classic spruce forest that has been heavily affected by windthrow and bark beetle infestation in younger years. Since the mid-2010s, it has been gradually converted into a site-appropriate oak-hornbeam forest with 70% oak. This should also promote its value for the drinking water supply and as a local recreation area for the city of Steyr.
