Florian Thalhofer (* 1972 in Burglengenfeld ) is a German documentary filmmaker and media artist .

Life

Thalhofer grew up in Schwandorf, Bavaria . After changing schools several times, he graduated from the Max-Reger-Gymnasium in Amberg in 1993 . After doing community service in a drug therapy facility in Berlin , he studied visual communication and experimental media design at the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin (diploma 2000, master class student 2003).

Since 1997 he has focused on the topic of computer-based storytelling. Thalhofer's diploma thesis is the non-linear documentary "Korsakow Syndrome" (2000). In order to make this film, Thalhofer programmed his own authoring environment, the later Korsakow system , a program for creating non-linear and rule-based films.

Thalhofer taught from 2001 to 2005 together with Willem Velthoven and Heinz Emigholz in the interactive narration class at the UdK. In 2003 Thalhofer passed the master class examination with Joachim Sauter . Thalhofer's Korsakov system is used by media artists around the world. From 2001 to 2008 the Mediamatic Institute , Amsterdam organized workshops across Europe at which the Korsakov system was taught. Since 2008–2016, Thalhofer has continued to develop the software in collaboration with a research group at Concordia University in Montréal, Canada. Thalhofer was visiting professor at the German Literature Institute Leipzig (DLL) from 2005 to 2006, guest lecturer at the dffb in 2009 and guest lecturer at the UdK in the class of Heinz Emigholz in 2009/2010.
