The Monte Toraggio (in Ligurian : Turage ) is a 1971 meter high mountain on the border between the Italian region of Liguria and the French department of Alpes-Maritimes . With its slopes it separates the Val Nervia from the Val Roia . Although its elevation is part of the mountain range of the Ligurian Alps , the mountain top is only about 20 kilometers from the Ligurian Sea . From the top of Monte Toraggio you can see the beaches of the municipalities of Bordighera and Sanremo .
A special feature of Monte Toraggio is the existence of two main peaks connected by an approximately 250 meter long mountain ridge . With its 1971.6 meters height, the west summit is only 30 centimeters higher than the east summit.
etymology
There are two theories about the origin of the name Toraggio. The first says that the name comes from the deity Torevaius and that the mountain served as a place of worship . A second theory leads the name back to the phrase Tauraricum - an ancient grazing law at the time of the Roman Empire .
geology
The mountain-forming layers consist of sedimentary rock , the foot of the mountain being largely composed of marl , and in the higher areas of the mountain also of nummulite limestone . Because of this geomorphological feature and the special flora and fauna , Monte Toraggio was designated as an area of community importance .
