List of the largest islands in the Mediterranean
This is a list of the largest islands in the Mediterranean . It includes those islands whose area is at least 100 km².
The European Mediterranean is a Mediterranean between southern Europe , North Africa and the Middle East and a tributary of the Atlantic Ocean . It is one of the largest inland seas in the world and is connected to the Atlantic Ocean via the Strait of Gibraltar and the Black Sea via the Bosphorus .
The Mediterranean includes numerous archipelagos as well as larger and smaller islands ; a total of over 4,300 in number. The majority of the islands belong to the European of the 24 Mediterranean countries . Most of the Mediterranean islands can be found by far off the rugged coasts of Greece and Croatia . The Greek islands make up around 80 percent of all islands in the Mediterranean; However, only about a quarter of the total area, as they include many islets , rocks and reefs , which are mostly uninhabited and small in area. The country with the largest share of the Mediterranean islands is Italy ; the Italian islands are also the most populous.
In the Mediterranean there are two island states with the Republic of Cyprus ( de jure ) and Malta .
