The Chaîne des Puys , sometimes also called Monts Dômes , is a chain of volcanic mountains in the French Massif Central , in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region . It extends in north-south direction over a length of about 30 kilometers and includes around a hundred extinct volcanoes. It is located west of Clermont-Ferrand , in the Puy-de-Dôme department . The highest point is the Puy de Dôme of the same name , with a height of 1465 meters above sea level.
The Chaîne des Puys is part of the Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Nature Park .
geology
The area contains the remains of three different types of volcanoes:
- Stromboli- type cinder cones (most common occurrence),
- Mont Pelée- type lava domes ,
- Maar- type crater lakes .
The volcanoes date from the Quaternary period . The first eruptions took place around 90,000 years ago, the last around 6,000 years ago on Lac Pavin .

- Puy Pariou (1189 m),
- Puy de Clerziou (1197 m),
- Puy de Côme (1253 m),
- Puy de Dôme (1465 m),
- Puy de Mercœur (1249 m),
- Puy de Lassolas (1197 m),
- Puy de Monténard (1173 m).
Vulcania
The European Park for Volcanism, Vulcania , is a theme park that deals with all issues relating to volcanism and deals with them in a large number of exhibits and installations. It is located in Saint-Ours-les-Roches in the middle of the real volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys.
