Vulcania

Under the name Vulcania , the “European Park for Volcanism ” was opened in Saint-Ours , Auvergne , France in 2002 . The complex is located in the middle of the Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Nature Park , in the Chaîne des Puys volcano chain .

History of origin

The initiative to found Vulcania came from Katia and Maurice Krafft in 1988 ; however, the idea was only realized several years after her death. Former President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing promoted the establishment of the theme park as regional president of Auvergne.

The museum and the multimedia presentations are located on different levels underground. The Austrian Hans Hollein won the architecture competition and his project was realized. Construction work began in 1997. The science and leisure park, which cost 110 million euros to build, opened on February 20, 2002.
