ESET is a security software company founded in 1992 in Bratislava ( Slovakia , formerly Czechoslovakia ). It is privately owned and has offices in more than 200 countries. The distribution of ESET products in Germany , Austria and Switzerland is handled by ESET Deutschland GmbH in Jena .

history

Headquarters in the Aupark Tower

The two programmers Peter Paško and Miroslav Trnka wrote their first detection program for computer viruses in 1987. Five years later, ESET sro was founded in Bratislava with Rudolf Hrubý . The company name is based on the name of the Egyptian goddess Isis . ESET's first product was the NOD antivirus for DOS . In 1998 the first version for Windows came onto the market with NOD32 v1.0 and in the same year it received its first award from the British magazine Virus Bulletin. In 2007, ESET Internet Security added a complete security suite with antivirus, antispam, firewall and theft protection.

In 1999 the first overseas office was opened in San Diego . Further offices followed in Prague (2001), Buenos Aires (2004), Krakow (2008), Singapore (2010). In 2011, the second Slovak branch was opened in Košice and a year later a branch on the campus of the École polytechnique de Montréal in Canada . ESET was named the most successful company in Slovakia in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2016, 2017 and 2018. In February 2015, a cybersecurity center was set up in Bratislava in cooperation with the Slovak Technical University and the Comenius University . Furthermore, there are currently branches in the Irish Wexford as well as in Bristol and Moscow . ESET's main office is now in the Aupark Tower in Bratislava- Petržalka .

Most of the programs for Windows sold by ESET are written in assembly language.

General

ESET products run on both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Windows operating systems from Windows 2000 / XP to Windows 10 including the server variants. With older Windows versions (Windows NT 4.0), only version 2 of NOD32 can be used. In addition, there were or are program versions for Android , BSD , Linux , macOS , Novell NetWare , Solaris , Symbian and Windows Mobile (up to V6.5).

The ThreatSense scanning engine makes extensive use of generic signatures and heuristic methods. In addition, an online checker called LiveGrid is also integrated in ESET products , which checks files and processes against an online database that is updated in real time by users of ESET software. This function can be completely or partially deactivated. The Anti-Stealth technology is used to detect rootkits.

ESET has been offering a free online virus scanner on its website since August 2007. This uses ActiveX to scan the computer for viruses and other pests. Based on this online scanner, a scanner for Facebook was released at the end of 2014 , which u. a. Detected suspicious activity by Facebook users and gave them the opportunity to have their profile checked by the ESET online scanner for Facebook. This anti-malware process was later integrated directly into Facebook.

Independently of this, ESET also offers a social media scanner that scans the profiles of Twitter or Facebook users who give this service access to their profile for links to malware and, depending on the setting, for example by email, instant message or tweet informed about it. This service will be discontinued in August 2020.

ESET offers a rescue CD for Windows operating systems in ISO format . This is based on Ubuntu and can be downloaded and used free of charge - even on a USB stick . An easy-to-use Windows program for creating the bootable disc is available online so that no separate burning program or knowledge of using ISO files is required to create the disc. If the created data medium is booted , the computer can be scanned for malware without having to load the installed operating system and programs installed on it - including any malware that may be present.

The ESET SysInspector is a diagnostic utility for Windows that allows in-depth analysis of the operating system, including running processes, registry entries , startup entries, network connections, and perform more. SysInspector logs are XML files and can either be analyzed yourself or sent to other people for analysis. A log file can be saved with a business product as a service script in order to remove previously defined objects from the computer. This removal can also be done on products with home software or with the version from the website.

ESET also offers free "cleaners" and other utilities such as: B. to remove malicious software that is difficult to remove. Since 2017, ESET has also been working with Google Inc. on the Chrome Cleanup software for integration with Google Chrome .

Mobile device products

ESET Mobile Antivirus was designed to protect smartphones from viruses, spyware , adware , Trojan horses ("Trojans"), worms, rootkits and other unwanted software. It also offered an anti-spam filter for SMS to -Messaging. Versions for Windows Mobile and Symbian OS were also available. ESET discontinued ESET Mobile Antivirus in January 2011 and offered ESET Mobile Security as a free upgrade for licensed users of ESET Mobile Antivirus. The program was released on September 2, 2010 for Windows Mobile and Symbian OS, while an open beta version was available on April 22, 2010. The version for Android devices was released on December 16, 2011. The ESET Mobile Security Äpp offers an anti-malware and an anti-spam function and supplements the previous product with anti-theft devices , such as SIM locks ("Sim Locking") and remote wiping ("Remote Wipe"), a firewall, etc. ESET Mobile is available for Android and thus also for tablets for both home and company use.

On October 8, 2012, ESET launched an additional app to close the USSD security leak in smartphones. A "Mobile Security and Antivirus" app for Android has also been available since the end of 2014. It is available free of charge, although the full version can be purchased from Google Play, the manufacturer's website and the Amazon Appstore . It contains functions such as a malware scan, theft protection, a call and SMS blocker, a phishing protection and a possibility to check security-relevant settings and authorizations of installed apps. In a comparison by Stiftung Warentest , the Android app was the test winner in 2016 and 2018.

Business products

For users in the business sector, ESET offers various security packages that link several individual applications. The two main products are Endpoint Antivirus and Endpoint Security.

On March 10, 2010, ESET released Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server , which included the two antimalware and antispam modules. The current version 6 supports Microsoft Exchange 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

On June 1, 2010, the first ESET File Security product contender for Microsoft Windows Server v4.3 was released to the public. This program is based on the business version of NOD32 Antivirus for Microsoft server operating systems and offers an improved user interface, automatic exclusions for critical directories and data as well as unspecific optimizations for work processes on the servers. Like ESET Gateway Security, both applications are also available for Linux.

ESET Security is available for Microsoft SharePoint and Kerio- based systems . In addition, the applications ESET Secure Authentication for Windows Server and ESET Endpoint Encryption (formerly DESlock +) are available, which offer secure login and encryption processes. The Central Management Console ESET Security Management Center (formerly ESET Remote Administrator) allows network administrators to control and manage other ESET business products via the company network.

In recent years, the portfolio has been expanded to include endpoint detection & response solutions (ESET Dynamic Threat Defense, ESET Enterprise Inspector), as well as products for license management and for managed service providers (MSP), followed by RMM, PSA, DEM tools .
