ESET NOD32 Antivirus , also known as NOD32 , is an antivirus program with anti- spyware protection, email protection and browser protection developed by the Slovak company ESET . The product is sold as a business and home edition. The Business Edition packages also have ESET Remote Administrator , taking into account server use and management, mirroring of dangers in signature database updates and installation capability on Microsoft Windows Server operating systems. Based on NOD32 Antivirus, ESET Internet Security has been available since 2007 as a comprehensive security package for home users.

history

The first version of NOD32 called NOD-ICE was developed by Miroslav Trnka and Peter Paško in 1987, as computer viruses became increasingly widespread.

Initially, the program with IT workers in Eastern European countries gained popularity as ESET was based in Slovakia. Although the program abbreviation was pronounced in individual letters, the new, worldwide use of the program soon led to a simpler pronunciation than a word, the English word nod . The initial word NOD stands for Nemocnica na Okraji Disku ("Hospital at the end of the disk "), a play on words in connection with the Czechoslovak hospital series Nemocnice na kraji města (The hospital on the outskirts of the city).

On December 2, 2009, ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for Mac OS X and ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for Linux were released for public testing. ESET announced the program for the automatic detection and cleaning of cross-platform - malware , scanning of archives, automatic scanning of removable media such as USB flash drives (if any) to perform real-time scans to deliver reports and GUI for the version of Microsoft free. The second beta test version was released on January 9, 2010 and the third on June 10, 2010.

The current version 4.0 for Mac OS X was released on September 5th, 2011 under the name ESET Cyber ​​Security . This version with the familiar name NOD32 was released for Linux on April 8, 2011.

In the business sector, the program is offered under the name Endpoint Antivirus . In addition, the business application ESET File Security is based on NOD32 Antivirus.

Discontinued products

On February 1, 2010, version 2.7 of NOD32 and all previous versions of NOD32 Antivirus were discontinued. They have been taken down from the ESET website; also from the product pages and the e-store. Version 2.7 was the last version that supported the DOS -based operating systems (95/98 / ME). Virus signature database updates and customer support ended on February 1, 2012.

Awards

ESET NOD32 Antivirus performed mostly well in tests. In the retrospective proactive test by AV-Comparatives in May 2008, which simulated the heuristic capabilities of antivirus programs with old signatures, it achieved the highest certification level, Advanced + . However, NOD32 did not do well in the script malware (detection rate 3%), Windows viruses (24%) and other malware (14%) categories.

In a comparative test published by Virus Bulletin on September 2, 2008, NOD32 Antivirus found 94.4 percent of malware and 94.7 percent of spyware. These values ​​were higher than those of competitors such as Norton Internet Security and ZoneAlarm , but below Windows Live OneCare and Avira Antivirus . In the RAP Average Quadrant between December 2011 and June 2012, Virus Bulletin found that ESET was at a similar level averaging 94 percent. ESET was recognized for its spam blocking capabilities and anti- phishing capabilities, and earned an award only 19 other antivirus manufacturers have won.

On September 15, 2011, Seth Rosenblatt from CNET also rated version 5.0 and awarded a score of 5/5.

In the test by Stiftung Warentest in 2011, ESET took second place together with competing products from G Data and Avira . In the follow-up test by Stiftung Warentest in April 2012, ESET received a "satisfactory" rating (2.6) and came fourth. In the test carried out by Stiftung Warentest in April 2013, ESET scored "good" in all four individual disciplines (virus protection, firewall, handling, computer load) and thus came first in the overall ranking (overall score: 2.1).

As of April 27, 2011, NOD32 Antivirus has garnered 67 VB100 awards from Virus Bulletin. For the tenth time in a row, the program received the VB100 Award on July 15, 2013.
