Avira Antivirus (until 2011 Avira AntiVir ) is an antivirus program from the German software manufacturer Avira .

An open umbrella in different shapes is the traditional symbol of the company and its main product Avira Antivirus and the Auerbach Foundation .

Market positioning

The use of the freeware version Avira Free Antivirus is free of charge for users , for an extended range of functions or the requirements in a commercial environment, Avira Antivirus Pro and Avira Internet Security Suite are available as paid versions for private customers . Avira offers customers some more free programs in the field of computer security on, business customers also functions for protection of personal computers and file , mail and proxy - servers for the operating systems Windows and Linux . Support for the variants for PDAs and devices with Windows Mobile was discontinued at the end of 2011.

In 1988 the company H + BEDV Datentechnik brought the product AntiVir onto the market, one of the very first professional anti-virus programs. In June 2004 AntiVir integrated protection against Internet dialers , which at that time was not included in any other product anywhere in the world. Because of this, the state of Baden-Württemberg awarded the manufacturer the "Innovation of the Month" award as part of a medium-sized enterprise initiative. In the same year an AntiVir port for Linux appeared . Later, in addition to the Windows variants, the Unix-like operating systems FreeBSD , OpenBSD and Solaris were also supported.

With the release of version 2012, Avira renamed its product range. The previously used brand AntiVir was abandoned; from Avira Antivir Personal , the free version has been Avira Free Antivirus from Avira AntiVir Premium was Avira Antivirus Premium and Avira Premium Security Suite was to Avira Internet Security . On April 9, 2013 it was announced that Avira Free Antivirus now supports Windows 8 and Microsoft has certified the product accordingly .

On June 30, 2013, support for Linux ended. According to the manufacturer, existing versions are to be maintained until June 2016.

Functions

Avira Antivirus fends off Trojans , worms and backdoors , and protects against dialers and rootkits . Infected files can be repaired in most cases. Among other things, a virus scanner is integrated that scans the data traffic in the system in real time and sounds an alarm in an emergency. The program can use a heuristic function to protect against previously unknown viruses. If a false positive or previously undetected malware is suspected, it is possible to upload the affected files to the manufacturer for a detailed analysis. Since the more up-to-date the virus definitions are, the greater the benefit of an antivirus program, Avira provides new virus definition files several times a day at irregular intervals.

From version 7.06 Avira Antivirus has a process protection, the aim of which is to prevent the virus scanner from being terminated by another program. With version 8.1 the program was visually revised and modularized. Version 9, released in March 2009, brought support for dual-core processors and, in the freeware version, spyware protection and support for less powerful netbooks .

Version 10 of the software was released on March 23, 2010 and contains the ProActiv pattern recognition, which is supposed to recognize unknown malware using specific action patterns. In addition, the user interface has been revised and the generic repair has been improved. This should now be able to better clean infected files and the Windows registry database from malware. The 2012 version of Avira Antivirus was released on October 4, 2011. It should be more resource-efficient and remove viruses more effectively. In addition, the interface has been heavily revised.

Since July 25, 2016, the Pro versions have also been updated in the system tray to install the Avira Launcher, which was previously only required for Avira Free and advertises other Avira products.

Free variants

In the free version, Antivirus does not check e-mail traffic directly when it is sent or received. The virus scanner is activated every time the email program accesses files. The pattern recognition available from version 10 is also not included in the free version. Since October 1, 2013, the program no longer shows daily advertisements, but instead regularly indicates the available premium versions of the program.

Free variants for mobile devices with the Android operating system are available under the name Avira Antivirus Security and for iOS under the name Avira Mobile Security .
