Norton Security (formerly Norton Internet Security) is security software from the American software company Symantec . Since it was first published in 1990, it has been used by over 370 million users (as of Jan. 2006). Norton Internet Security offers a very comprehensive range of protection against threats from the Internet . The software has long been criticized for its high resource consumption and the rather irregular distribution of updates, according to tests it performs reasonably well in comparison with competing products.
Versions
2006
The 2006 version contained the following programs:
- Norton AntiVirus (protects against viruses , Trojans, and spyware by detecting, isolating, and removing them)
- Norton Personal Firewall (protects against unauthorized access from the Internet)
- Norton Privacy Control (monitors private files)
- Norton Antispam (filters out spam emails and stores them in a separate spam folder)
- Norton Parental Control (with a so-called "parental control" can be blocked with criminal or pornographic content)
2007
The 2007 version contained the following programs:

2008
The 2008 version was released at the end of September 2007. On the one hand, it improved resource consumption and, on the other hand, added the functions "Norton Identity Safe" and "SONAR" (Symantec Online Network for Advanced Response).
2009
The 2009 version was released in America on September 9, 2008. As with all Norton products, the Germany release was delayed by a few weeks.
The 2009 version introduced a completely revised interface and significantly improved performance and scan times. The "Norton Insight" function was also introduced, which, if requested, compares certain system and program files with versions stored online and excludes them from further checks if they are successful. This should increase the performance again.
2010
Version 2010 (17.0) was released in America on September 8, 2009. The new features of this version include:

2011
The 2011 version was released on August 31, 2010.
2012
Norton Internet Security 2012 was released in early September 2011. In this version, the user interface of the program was mainly worked on, which now has fewer symbols on the start page and should therefore appear more clearly. In addition, Norton Management introduced a function that enables companies to centrally control and uniformly configure multiple Norton installations. At the beginning of 2013, a version based on the original version called Norton Internet Security CBE (Computer Bild Edition) was brought onto the market in conjunction with the Illustrated Computer Bild magazine of the same name . Buyers of the magazine received an installation DVD and a so-called annual license (4 × 90 days) for exactly one device. The corresponding product keys can be obtained online, after registration, from the Computer-Bild website.

A beta version of Norton Internet Security 2014 was released in June 2013. With the new version, Symantec promises users more comprehensive protection, higher performance and improved identity protection. In addition, the protection mechanisms have been specially optimized for users of mobile devices .
2018
Functions
Norton AntiVirus and Norton Personal Firewall are also sold as stand-alone applications. The software is automatically updated at regular intervals via the so-called LiveUpdate . B. the virus definitions are always up to date. Alternatively, updates can also be downloaded manually or via a definition file. Purchasing a retail or online version enables you to download updates via LiveUpdate for one year (90 days for OEM versions). Thereafter, a paid subscription extension must be obtained via the Internet.
criticism
In older versions, complete deinstallation was not possible for many users, which resulted in users who e.g. B. wanted to switch to a different antivirus software, had to completely reinstall their operating system . Symantec itself provides a program called Norton Removal Tool for this purpose , which, in contrast to the normal deinstallation routine, removes program files that are very deeply anchored in the system.
