Norton AntiVirus is an antivirus program from the US software company Symantec . On October 2, 2014, it was announced that Symantec is discontinuing the program.

The suffix "Norton" comes from the former software development company Peter Norton Computing , which developed this program. The company was bought by Symantec in 1990.

Since its creation in 1990, it has been used by over 250 million users annually, making it by far the most frequently installed antivirus program worldwide. This is achieved, among other things, by the fact that it is pre-installed in addition to Microsoft Windows on many notebooks sold, making it easier for new customers to be won.

With Norton AntiVirus you can, among other things:

The software can be updated again and again via the so-called LiveUpdate so that the virus definitions are always up to date. These updates can be downloaded for one year after registering the software (90 days for OEM versions), after which you have to obtain a new subscription via the Internet or buy a new version in stores or download it from the Internet.

Norton Antivirus has been individually and security package Norton Internet Security sold. Since the 2015 version, it has only been available as a package with Norton Security. Vice President Brian Dye concluded in 2014 that antivirus software is inefficient. In addition, sales of the software were falling. Instead, Symantec is increasingly focusing on combating malware after it has penetrated company networks.

Product versions

The "Symantec AntiVirus" sold by Symantec as a company product was called "Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition" up to and including version 7.61. It consistently dispenses with the “colorful” surface of the standard product known as the “Home” variant, is significantly more resource-efficient thanks to a different engine and can also be uninstalled cleanly. It offers additional features specially developed for companies, including: a. complete pre-configuration by administrators, which can also be set as mandatory so that the user can e.g. B. cannot deactivate real-time protection and the system administrator thus retains control. LiveUpdate via internal server is also possible, which saves corresponding Internet traffic, since only the server itself downloads directly from Symantec, which then supplies the numerous clients via a fast and inexpensive LAN . On July 4, 2012, support for "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" was discontinued.

The successor is called "Symantec Endpoint Protection" (SEP) and continues versioning with version number 11. The SEP contains further protection components such as B. a firewall , the component for scanning malware continues to call itself "Symantec AntiVirus".

The products available from Symantec for end users bear the suffix Norton. Norton (by Symantec) AntiVirus is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Android .
