ZoneAlarm is the name of a proprietary personal firewall developed by Check Point (formerly Zone Labs).
history
ZoneAlarm was released in 2000 and became one of the most popular personal firewalls and was initially considered to be the best of its kind.
As of version 6.5, the Windows 98 SE and ME operating systems are no longer supported. Since version 8.0 Windows 2000 is no longer supported. A ZoneAlarm version that runs on 32-bit versions of Windows Vista has been available in English since June 14, 2007 and in German since June 22, 2007. The support of 64-bit versions of the Windows operating systems is only possible for Windows Vista and Windows 7 , as can be seen from the system requirements of the free version .
Technical details
The main focus of the ZoneAlarm personal firewall is ease of installation and configuration . The product is available as a free version for private users and as a commercial version in the form of ZoneAlarm Pro , among other things , which offers a wider range of functions.
The name ZoneAlarm comes from the fact that the personal firewall allows separate security settings for two different security zones - one for the local network and one for the Internet .

Awards
Both the free and the pro editions of ZoneAlarm Firewall were recognized as Editor's Choice by the English-language PCMag in 2017 .
criticism
- In January 2006, ZoneAlarm was suspected of sending encrypted data to the manufacturer. According to the manufacturer, this was a program error that was fixed with the following version 6.1.744 on March 1, 2006.
- In autumn 2010, users of the free version were to be encouraged to purchase the (paid) Internet Security Suite by means of a fake virus warning ( scareware ) . The German version was not affected.
- The Federal Office for Information Security sees an inconsistent assessment in the use of personal firewalls. Basically, the BSI refers here to the measures for safe surfing.
