Windows Live OneCare (previously known as Windows OneCare Live ) was system software produced by Microsoft to secure and optimize the Microsoft Windows operating system . The software was chargeable, the license for this had to be renewed annually.

Discontinuation

On November 18, 2008, Microsoft announced that Windows Live OneCare would be replaced by a free, end-user security solution that was developed under the code name "Morro". In the meantime, the name of the successor has officially become known and is Microsoft Security Essentials . According to Microsoft, this should offer a certain basic protection for Windows computers and was made available free of charge on September 29, 2009.

history

Windows OneCare 1.0 reached the beta phase in the summer of 2005. In May 2006, sales started with Windows Defender against spyware in June 2006 was announced. Windows Live OneCare 1.5 beta was released by Microsoft in October 2006. In the summer of 2007, Windows Live OneCare was mainly based on technology that GeCAD had taken over 4 years earlier for protection against viruses and Trojans, as well as on spyware protection from Giant Company Software, which was taken over in December 2004. Version 1.5 was finalized on November 16, 2007.

In March 2008, Microsoft announced the acquisition of Komoku to complement security technologies in Windows Live OneCare and Forefront .

Windows Live OneCare 2.5 Final was released on July 3, 2008, and a server release followed on the same day.

After the successor product Microsoft Security Essentials was announced in the second half of 2009, retail sales of Windows Live OneCare ended on June 30, 2009, online sales in October 2009, and product support on April 11, 2011.

Functions

Windows Live OneCare currently contains an integrated anti-virus solution, a firewall, a security solution (backup) and a tuning solution. A registry cleaner should also be added, but the benefit was so little that it was decided against the function.

Version 2 offers functions for managing multiple computers and networks, sharing printers, optimizing the system start-up, improved backup and backing up photos over the Internet.

The goal of Windows Live OneCare was to create a simple security solution for end users and has a very minimalistic interface so as not to confuse users.

compatibility

Version 1.5 of OneCare is only compatible with 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Vista. A 64-bit version was only released for Windows Server 2008 in version 2.5. Neither version of OneCare starts in Safe Mode.
