The Microsoft Security Essentials ( MSE ), former project name Morro is a free antivirus program of the company Microsoft that provides protection against various types of malicious programs such as viruses , spyware , rootkits and trojans for Windows is designed to provide systems.

The MSE replaced Microsoft Windows Live OneCare , a paid anti-virus solution, as well as Windows Vista and Windows 7 the free Windows Defender , which protected the user merely provides adware and spyware.

Since Windows 8 , the Security Essentials have been integrated as Windows Defender and offer free virus and spyware protection.

development

Microsoft announced Morro on November 19, 2008. It marked a turning point in Microsoft's antivirus strategy. Instead of offering a paid solution, as with OneCare , it should be free and easy to use. A legal Windows version is required to install Microsoft Security Essentials. The previously known version 1.0.2140.0 revealed that the internal name of Morro was changed to Microsoft Security Essentials .

An official beta version was published on June 23, 2009 and made available with a download quota of 75,000 only for selected countries. The first finished end user edition ( version 1.0 ) appeared on September 29, 2009 and was available in 8 languages and 19 countries.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2 was made available for public download on December 16, 2010. New functions are heuristic malware detection and, under Windows Vista and 7, filtering of network traffic.

Microsoft has been issuing the "Standalone System Sweeper" rescue operating system since mid-2011, which can be started from CD or a USB stick and which includes Microsoft Security Essentials .

On April 24, 2012 Microsoft released version 4.0 of the virus protection program. This has a real-time scanner operating in the background of the computer and a manually controllable file scanner. In addition to the newly integrated automatic removal of malware , both operation and data processing performance have been improved.

Functions

MSE is a significantly reduced version of OneCare , which only offers protection against malicious software. After installing the product, Windows Defender , which is preinstalled by default on Windows Vista and 7, will be deactivated.

Updates to the anti-virus solution are published daily through Microsoft Update. If the default settings are used, files in archives will be extracted and scanned. Downloaded files and e-mail attachments are also examined. Before any action is taken on a suspicious file, the user is first informed. If there is no interaction, the default action is taken after 10 minutes. System restore entries are made prior to any change.

As with Windows Defender , membership in Microsoft SpyNet is established, whereby personal data can be transferred. Since version 2.0 this can be switched off.

System requirements

The minimum system requirements depend on the operating system version used. An activated copy of Windows is required. Since the end of support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014, a download for this system is no longer possible, although signature updates were still offered until July 14, 2015.
