Pierre Amalric  (born June 24, 1923 in  Vielmur-sur-Agout , † June 11, 1999 in  Albi ) was a French ophthalmologist .

Career

As the son of a general practitioner who himself had gained ophthalmological experience in World War I , he studied medicine in Toulouse from 1940 . At the same time he graduated in history . During the German occupation he was involved in the Resistance under the care of one of his professors. In the post-war period he first worked as a general practitioner.

In 1949 he began his specialist training in ophthalmology and in 1953 became senior physician at the University Eye Clinic in Toulouse . Instead of continuing his university career, he decided to set up his own clinic in Albi according to his wishes and with the most modern technology (1953).

Scientific work

Ophthalmology

To stimulate scientific research, he visited many university clinics all over Europe and made important contacts. He was particularly interested in photography of the eye. As one of the first ophthalmologists in France, he introduced fluorescence angiography and laser therapy (xenon laser) to the clinic. This resulted in an important examination of the blood flow to the choroid. The "Syndrome triangle" was named after him - Amalric sign.

He has published more than 250 scientific articles. In 1960 he was the first to describe the Diallinas-Amalric syndrome .

history

Amalric not only had an excellent medical library, there were also rare copies of works on regional and European history. Amalric's main interest was extensive research into the mysteriously disappeared French navigator Jean-François Galaup de Lapérouse , who was born in Albi. As a member of the board of the Société Francophone d'Histoire d'Ophtalmologie, he devoted himself to all issues relating to the history of ophthalmology, with the main focus on ophthalmology during the French Revolution.

Amalric and Albi

Amalric supported the preservation of downtown Albi financially and ideally. Works by regional authors on history were supported. In honor of Jean-François Galaup de Lapérouse , Amalric organized symposiums and congresses. He donated his extensive library to the city, which named a media library after him in his honor.
