Ernst Ferdinand Oehme
Ernst Ferdinand Oehme (born April 23, 1797 in Dresden ; † April 10, 1855 there ) was a painter attributable to German Romanticism .
Life
After self-taught beginnings, Ernst Ferdinand Oehme was accepted at the Dresden Art Academy in 1819 and in the same year he was a student of the Norwegian painter Johan Christian Clausen Dahl , who had settled in Dresden after studying in Copenhagen. Dahl introduced Oehme to his friend Caspar David Friedrich . Together with Friedrich's student Johann August Heinrich , Oehme devoted himself to studying and experiencing nature in the area around Dresden, in particular Saxon Switzerland . The work Waldinneres (1822) was to become a result of these studies .
At the Academy Exhibition in 1821, Oehme surprised everyone with the painting Cathedral in Winter . The work depicts monks who go through the snow of the winter night into a church in Gothic style - towards a high altar lit by candles. The influence of Frederick can be felt in this subject (cf. his Abbey in the Eichwald , 1809/1810).
Since the 1830s, Oehme broke away from Friedrich's role model and devoted himself to depicting landscapes that are more realistic and less laden with symbols. Oehme died in Dresden in 1855, his grave is in the Alten Annenfriedhof in Dresden's southern suburb . His son Erwin also became a painter.
