Alcarràs is in the province of Lleida and belongs to the comarca (district) of Segrià . The towns of Montagut and Vallmanya belong to the municipality of Alcarràs .

history

The city is documented in historical documents of the diocese of Lleida in 1168 with the Arabic spelling as Alcarraz (with z). In 1497 Alcarraz had 87 inhabitants. In 2019, 9514 residents were registered in Alcarràs.

Worth seeing

The Església de la Mare de Déu de l'Assumpció Church is a three-nave, trapezoidal Baroque building with a unique central dome added in the second half of the eighteenth century. The year "1786" is on the street facade. The foundations of the church come from a medieval castle from the 14th century. There is a crypt under the choir (apse) , where relics are kept. The unfinished bell tower is to the side of the main facade and contains a bell cage with two openings. In 1936 most of the paintings and parts of the interior were destroyed by arson. After the end of the Spanish Civil War , the main facilities were restored. The church has been a listed building since 2000 and is listed in the Inventari del Patrimoni Arquitectònic de Catalunya . From 2001 to 2003 the church was renovated on behalf of the Department de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya .
