The Río Matarraña ( Catalan : Riu Matarranya ) is a right-hand tributary of the Ebro in northeastern Spain . Its catchment area has an area of ​​1250 km² .

The Matarraña rises in the mountains of the Puertos de Beceite, flows through the towns of Valderrobres and Mazaleón ( province of Teruel ), enters the province of Saragossa below Mazaléon , touches Maella and Fabara and finally Nonaspe , where the Algars flows into its upper reaches forms the border between Aragon and Catalonia . A railway line follows the Matarraña in its lower reaches. On its last stretch, the river forms the border between Aragon (province of Saragossa) and Catalonia ( province of Tarragona ). The last part is dammed up by the Pantà de Riba-roja on the Ebro.

The Embalse de Pena reservoir is located on the Pena tributary .

The river is a typical Mediterranean body of water with strongly fluctuating water flow.

The river has a rich population of barbels , south-western European noses ( Parachondrostoma toxostoma ) and trout , which has been endangered by pollution in recent years.
