The Supercop (original title: Poliziotto superpiù ) is an Italian film from 1980, in which Terence Hill plays the leading role as "Dave Speed". The film is a mix of action, science fiction and comedy. The soundtrack " Super Snooper " was written by Carmelo and Michelangelo La Bionda , also known as The Oceans . The film opened in German cinemas on September 18, 1980.

action

Dave is in a prison cell and has beans as a hangman's meal. Soon after, the law enforcement officers lead him to an execution, of which he has already survived three. On the way there, he looks back on the events that have brought him into his current situation.

Rather unintentionally and on the orders of his superior Sergeant Dunlop, patrolman Dave Speed ends up in an evacuated Indian reservation in the Everglades to deliver a ticket. At the same time, NASA is testing a new type of rocket in this area , which is loaded with red plutonium and is supposed to be used to generate energy. When Speed tries to scare away a crocodile that has spread out in the boat with which he arrived, he shoots into the air and the missile explodes in a red fireball. He survived the extreme radiation exposure, but suddenly discovered supernatural powers with which he wanted to scare the Miami underworld . He has a kind of X-ray vision (called zero vision in the film), is invulnerable, can move things through the power of thought alone, can run as fast as an arrow, and catch pistol and rifle bullets with his bare hands and even his teeth. But Speed also has an Achilles heel , because as soon as he sees the color red, all strength fails and he becomes an ordinary police officer again without superpowers.

At first nobody wants to believe him. Everyone else, especially his boss Dunlop, thinks he is crazy and his superpowers are tricks. These assumptions are reinforced by the fact that Speed himself has not yet figured out the effect that the color red has on him, and he therefore often fails when he wants to prove his strength. Even his girlfriend Evelyn, Dunlop's niece, doesn't believe him. Only later is he enlightened by Silvius, an old man who claims to have had those superpowers himself but to have lost them with age.

Finally, Dave and Dunlop track down a counterfeit printer ring. The two follow the trail and learn that the counterfeit money is being smuggled into the country in fish trucks from a ship, the SS Barracuda, in the port. You make your way to the ship in the helicopter. Dunlop boarded the ship, but was knocked down by a Syndicate employee and left in the ship's refrigerator when it was sunk a short time later to destroy all evidence. After returning from the mission, Dave is charged with the murder of Dunlop.

Now the film returns to the opening scene. Speed is put on the death chair. However, the criminal ring also discovered its weak point and sent Dave a bouquet of red flowers. After getting a piece of chewing gum as a last wish, Dave manages to talk the pastor about the flowers and thus survive the execution this time too. He jumps through the wall of the execution room into the water and, after using his superpowers to ask a fish for directions, arrives at the barracuda. He finds Dunlop frozen, but not dead. Speed now inflates his chewing gum until it reaches several meters in diameter and lifts the two of them out of the water into the sky. The heads of the counterfeit printer gang are now trying to escape by plane. Speed jumps from his bubble gum onto the plane and overpowers the bandits. Dunlop also jumps off the gum balloon and is caught by Speed at the last moment. As a result of the impact, the two disappear into an incredibly deep hole. Everyone involved believes the two did not survive the fall, but to everyone's surprise, Dunlop apparently calls a few minutes later from China and tells everyone that they are safe.

The film ends with the wedding between Dave and Evelyn. When Dave lifts her veil, he finds out that she has dyed her hair red.

criticism

"Quickly staged, naive adventure fairy tale in the style of comic booklets, whose sparse approaches to irony are drowned in the joke."

"To distract from the story, an alligator even has a cameo ."

- Herbert Mitgang : The New York Times

"Poor performance - both in front of and behind the camera - is abundant in this low-budget quickie."
