Kalevi Ensio Aho (born March 9, 1949 in Forssa , Finland ) is a Finnish composer .

Life

Aho received his first violin lessons at the age of 10; his first compositions date from this time. Aho studied violin at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and composition with Einojuhani Rautavaara . In 1971 he received his diploma. This was followed by a year of study with Boris Blacher in Berlin . In 1974 Aho received a scholarship from the Léonie Sonning Music Foundation . From 1974 to 1988 Aho was a lecturer in musicology at the University of Helsinki, from 1988 to 1993 he was a professor at the Sibelius Academy. From 1992 to 2011 he was composer in residence of the Sinfonia Lahti , and since 2012 he has been the orchestra's "honorary composer ". Aho, who lives in Helsinki, has been working as a freelance composer since 1993.

From 1994 to 2012 he received a number of government tax-free grants, which were intended to cover the cost of living and thus gave artists the opportunity to work on the works that were most important to them regardless of commissions. In Finnish one speaks of “taiteilijaprofessuuri” (“artist professorship”), a professorship without any institutional ties: a free, market-independent, but secure artist. When Aho reached the age of 63 - in March 2012 - the scholarship expired.

In 1990 Aho was awarded the Henrik Steffens Prize Lübeck, and in 2000 he was awarded the Pro Finlandia Order for his services to the musical life of Finland . In 2016 he received the Finnish State Prize for Music.

On May 13, 2018 Aho has been at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca the honorary doctorate conferred musicology.

Kalevi Aho was the jury chairman of the 2nd International Uuno Klami Composition Competition in 2008/09 . Members of the jury were the composers Anders Eliasson , Magnus Lindberg and the conductor Yasuo Shinozaki . In 2013/14 the composer chaired the jury of the 3rd International Uuno Klami Composition Competition (members of the jury were Magnus Lindberg, Erkki-Sven Tüür and Yasuo Shinozaki) and was a jury member of the Brandenburg Biennale, a composition competition for symphonic music, in 2014. Aho chaired the 4th International Uuno Klami Composition Competition in 2018/2019 (judges were Magnus Lindberg and Erkki-Sven Tüür).

plant

Aho is mainly known as a composer of large orchestral works and has so far written 17 symphonies (the 17th was created in 2017), also 32 instrumental concerts, 5 operas, vocal works and numerous compositions for various chamber music ensembles. His breakthrough as a composer came with his 1st symphony (1969) and the 3rd string quartet (1971). In addition to the influences of Shostakovich , the works of this period also show neoclassical traits. He later turned to a polystylistic , postmodern way of composing. His sometimes ironic contrasting of moods and styles led to comparisons with Gustav Mahler and Alfred Schnittke .

Numerous works by Aho are available on CD recordings, the orchestral works mainly under the direction of Osmo Vänskä . Kalevi Aho's compositional oeuvre is published by the Swedish label BIS.
