Iris ter Schiphorst

Iris ter Schiphorst (born May 22, 1956 in Hamburg ) is a composer , pianist , author , bassist , drummer and keyboardist . She has emerged as a composer of ensemble compositions, orchestral works and music-theatrical pieces. Her breakthrough came in 1999 with Ballade for Orchestra: Hundred Point Zero . While the idea of the closed work was increasingly disrupted in the 20th century, the traditional concept of the individual author function was hardly ever seriously questioned. In this respect, the exemplary collaboration with her temporary partner, the Berlin composer Helmut Oehring , is of great importance in a large number of co-productions.

biography

The desire to have children to become a dancer was thwarted by an illness. Her mother was a pianist and gave her first piano lessons. From 1973 to 1978 she first studied piano at the Bremen Music Academy. After numerous trips through Europe and Africa (1978-80) she played as a bassist, drummer and keyboard player in various rock groups, including in the Bremen women's band "Bruno und Paul". From 1986 she studied philosophy , theater studies and cultural studies at the Free University of Berlin and later at the Humboldt University . At the same time she attended composition courses with Dieter Schnebel and Luigi Nono as well as musicological seminars with Helga de la Motte-Haber . At the end of the 1980s she founded the Zeit-Musik association with Mayako Kubo , Frank Hilberg , Franz Martin Olbrisch and others . In 1990 the ensemble Intrors was founded, which specializes in live electronic music . From 1996 to 2001 she worked with her then partner, the Berlin composer Helmut Oehring.

Iris ter Schiphorst was elected as a new member of the Music Section at the spring general meeting of the Academy of the Arts Berlin on May 25, 2013.
